Enhancing Email Security: Recent Developments

The scale and sophistication of email threats continues to escalate, with bad actors searching for devious new ways to deceive email users, aiming to con them into passing over sensitive credentials or to click on malicious links that will render their networks inoperable without the payment of a hefty sum to satisfy a ransom demand.

It’s in that context that MailGuard’s team of engineers are continuing to invest in advancements to our email security capabilities.

Some recent updates include:

QR Code Detection and Image-only Spam Prevention

A relatively new and emerging trend involves scammers inserting images, and in particular QR codes into emails, in the hope that an unsuspecting email recipient will click through on the associated URL. The tactic is designed to bypass email filters that routinely scan any links that have been included within the body of an email.

MailGuard is committed to staying ahead of the curve and thwarting these bad actors by detecting and preventing image-based spam and QR code-related threats. Recent updates are aimed at improving our modules and detection models to enhance capabilities and stopping power in this area.

Here’s an example of one such threat which was masquerading as a ‘Final notice’ and stopped by MailGuard’s services in June. In this example, the cybercriminals behind the scam had inserted an image of a custom QR code instead of a link to the phishing page, in an attempt to prevent the emails from being blocked by email filtering services.

Expanded Encryption Policy

In an era where data privacy is paramount, MailGuard is expanding its granular control for the Encryption policy in an upcoming release. This enhancement enables customers to identify and respond to instances where encryption is lacking through the MailGuard policy set, ensuring a more comprehensive and robust security posture for organizations.

Spear Phishing Policy Enhancement

Spear phishing attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, where the phishing campaign is designed and targeted at specific individuals, often in conjunction with social engineering tactics to make the attack even harder to spot.

MailGuard is rising to the challenge by enhancing its spear phishing policy to effectively identify newer evasion techniques in an upcoming release. This update incorporates additional fuzzy logic to further bolster MailGuard's ability to detect even the most advanced and cunning threats.

MailGuard is committed to enhancing and continually updating its email security services. It has been a leader in cloud email security since 2001, and that commitment remains unwavering. With these recent updates and upcoming features, we are equipping partners and Admins with even more control and better tools.

Stay tuned for further exciting developments!

Keeping Businesses Safe and Secure

Prevention is always better than a cure, and one of the best defences is to encourage businesses to proactively boost their company’s cyber resilience levels to avoid threats landing in inboxes in the first place. The fact that a staggering 94% of malware attacks are delivered by email, makes email an extremely important vector for businesses to fortify.

No one vendor can stop all email threats, so it’s crucial to remind customers that if they are using Microsoft 365, they should also have a third-party email security specialist in place to mitigate their risk. For example, using a third-party cloud email solution like MailGuard.
