New Custom Email Header Condition for Content Filter Policies

MSPs and MailGuard Admins are on the front line of defending businesses against the rise of online scams, targeted email attacks and cybercrime more generally. Often scrambling for the next rung as they continue to progress their digital defenses, enforcement of policies, employee education and threat deterrence.

The words of Tony D’Amato (Al Pacino) in the movie ‘Any Given Sunday’ are befitting their daily grind: “Life is a game of inches… the margin for error is so small… one half step too late or too early, you don’t quite make it. One half second too slow or too fast, and you don’t quite catch it.” He could so easily have been talking about the challenges facing a SecOps team.

And so it is with email security. For a long time, MailGuard customers could only create policies against envelope information (Sender, Recipient) and only select headers (Subject, Filename, etc).

However, as we have witnessed an increasing trend of account takeover attacks, with legitimate services such as Mailchimp, Amazon, and others, being used to send out malicious emails, simply blacklisting or whitelisting the envelope sender was no longer enough. Especially since any policy changes could unwittingly block a large amount of legitimate emails or expose the businesses to large amounts of spam.

More flexibility was required to configure policies, so, the MailGuard team has built and released a new feature, where customers can now create policies against headers in an email. For the same example above, they can now for instance, use the header ‘From’ field to match a content policy to either block or allow the email through.

Keeping Businesses Safe and Secure

Prevention is always better than a cure, and one of the best defences is to encourage businesses to proactively boost their company’s cyber resilience levels to avoid threats landing in inboxes in the first place. The fact that a staggering 94% of malware attacks are delivered by email, makes email an extremely important vector for businesses to fortify.

No one vendor can stop all email threats, so it’s crucial to remind customers that if they are using Microsoft 365, they should also have a third-party email security specialist in place to mitigate their risk. For example, using a third-party cloud email solution like MailGuard.

MailGuard provides a range of solutions to keep businesses safe, from email filtering to email continuity and archiving solutions. Speak to your customers today to ensure they’re prepared, and get in touch with our team to discuss strengthening your customer’s Microsoft 365 security.
