Default DMARC Policy Settings for Microsoft Enhanced Filtering for Connectors

The following article is relevant for organisations that use Microsoft Enhanced Filtering for Connectors.

On July 31, Microsoft announced that from mid-August, DMARC policy settings for sender domains for inbound emails into Exchange Online will be rolled out.

For organisations using third-party email services to filter and protect inbound mail before it reaches Exchange Online, different conditions apply.

Microsoft advise that, “If the tenant recipient domain’s MX record points to a different email security solution that sits in front of Office 365, then ‘Honor DMARC’ will not be applied because the information about the sending infrastructure is likely affected by the complex mail flow routing.

However, if enhanced filtering for connectors is enabled, we do apply “Honor DMARC” even when MX is pointed to 3rd party, and it will be treated as normal incoming messages.”

In instances where your organisation has configured enhanced filtering for connectors, the advice is that admins should review the default anti-phishing policies for their tenant, to determine how to manage messages that are flagged as spoofing and customize if needed.

Keeping Businesses Safe and Secure

Prevention is always better than a cure, and one of the best defences is to encourage businesses to proactively boost their company’s cyber resilience levels to avoid threats landing in inboxes in the first place. The fact that a staggering 94% of malware attacks are delivered by email, makes email an extremely important vector for businesses to fortify.

No one vendor can stop all email threats, so it’s crucial to remind customers that if they are using Microsoft 365, they should also have a third-party email security specialist in place to mitigate their risk. For example, using a third-party cloud email solution like MailGuard.

MailGuard provides a range of solutions to keep businesses safe, from email filtering to email continuity and archiving solutions. Speak to your customers today to ensure they’re prepared, and get in touch with our team to discuss strengthening your customer’s Microsoft 365 security.
