One of 2018’s most defining moments in the field of cybersecurity was on May 25, when the EU implemented its General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Just to jog your memory a little, here’s our summary of what GDPR entails and the implications it has for businesses around the world.
Essentially, the central tenet of the regulation is the idea that responsibility for data security lies with organisations that hold that data. It encourages businesses to practice greater accountability and transparency when it comes to data management.
But approximately one year on, what has been the impact of GDPR around the world? How many companies were fined? And how many firms today are GDPR compliant?
Here are 5 key statistics that aim to provide you with a lowdown on what’s been going on since GDPR was implemented:
-
206,326 cases have been reported in the UK since GDPR came into effect in May 2018
-
Companies across Europe reported 41,502 data breaches since the regulation was introduced
-
A whopping €50 million was the highest ever fine imposed under the GDPR on Google for processing personal data for advertising purposes
-
As of 28th January 2019, regulators have imposed 91 fines for GDPR violations
-
59% of companies across the world consider themselves GDPR-ready
The rising number of data breaches, and the gargantuan GDPR fines associated with one (as seen above) act as powerful incentives for organisations to do a better job of protecting themselves from breaches. The best way to ensure they don’t fall afoul of GDPR is for companies to implement rigorous cybersecurity measures and keep the data they handle safe.
