Police Action Threatened in CityLink Scam Emails

This morning MailGuard detected a new criminal-intent email with fake
‘CityLink’ branding. CityLink is a toll-road payment platform operating in Melbourne, Australia.

This well-executed email scam is trying to deceive recipients into thinking they have an outstanding fine requiring payment, so they will click on a ‘view your toll invoice’ link - see screenshot, above.

The sender display name is ‘CityLink’ but the sender domain URL is ‘citylinkres[dot]com’ which is not an authentic CityLink domain.

You can see in the screenshot that the scammers are trying to make the recipients feel an urgency to click on the link by threatening that they may receive a ‘fine from Victoria Police’ if they do not take action. Scammers use psychological tricks like this to increase their click rates. If a recipient feels a sense of urgency to take action they may be less likely to take the time to check whether the message is authentic.

The link in this message leads to a malware download designed to covertly install itself on victim’s computers.

At the time MailGuard intercepted this scam, no other security vendors were detecting the emails.
