Wix Subscription Renewal Scam Targets Payment Details

Written by MailGuard | 18 November 2025 01:53:39 Z

Finance, tech, marketing, management… any number of your team members could be one wrong click away from disclosing your business’s credit card credentials in this latest scam parading as a Wix subscription renewal notification. The website builder has more than 250 million customers in 190 countries around the world, and sees more than 85,000 sites created using its tools every day, so it’s little wonder scammers see them as a prime target for stealing credentials from businesses.

The scam, intercepted by MailGuard’s AI threat detection platform, uses convincing Wix branding and employs urgency tactics to trick recipients into clicking through to a fake payment portal impersonating the brand.

How the scam works

The email, spoofed to appear as if it comes from Wix.com using the address noreply(at)rehmer-heimatverein(dot)de, is titled: “Subscription Renewal Notification”. It urges recipients to renew their Wix subscription within 2 days to avoid service interruption.

Clicking the “Review your subscription” button redirects victims to a phishing site masquerading as a legitimate Wix billing page. The spoofed site asks for:

  • Credit card details (number, CVV, expiry)
  • Name and address
  • Contact phone number

After submitting this data, the user is taken to a fake 3D Secure ‘Verified by Visa’ screen, requesting a one-time SMS verification code to "confirm" the transaction. This stage is used to bypass real-time fraud checks and authorise card use.

These fake pages closely replicate Wix’s branding, colours, and structure, making them difficult for untrained users to distinguish from the real thing.

A simple scam, but effective

While technically simple, a basic HTML email with a single link, this phishing attack is dangerously effective because it:

  • Creates urgency using a fake subscription deadline
  • Uses brand trust to encourage clicks
  • Mimics a legitimate checkout flow, including 3D Secure authentication
  • Exploits real billing behaviour (renewals, domain management, etc.)
Once victims enter their card details and address, attackers can quickly exploit or resell that data, sometimes within minutes

What to look for

Here are several red flags that can help identify scams like this:

  • Generic greetings (e.g., “Hello,” with no name)
  • Slightly off or suspicious sender addresses (@rehmer-heimatverein(dot)de)
  • Pressure to act within a short time window
  • Links that lead to domains not affiliated with the real company (e.g., squarewntwmpyesz6iwi1szvxzsgi(dot)com)

Payment screens that ask for full billing and card details outside a secure, known portal.

Stay Safe, Know the Signs

MailGuard advises all recipients of these emails to delete them immediately without clicking on any links. Responding or providing personal details can lead to identity theft, data breaches, and financial losses.

Avoid emails that:

  • Aren’t addressed to you personally.
  • Are unexpected and urge immediate action.
  • Contain poor grammar or miss crucial identifying details.
  • Direct you to a suspicious URL that isn’t associated with the genuine company.
