Spotify spoofed in scam targeting subscribers

Written by MailGuard | 21 April 2026 08:06:09 Z

MailGuard has identified and blocked a sophisticated phishing campaign impersonating Spotify, designed to harvest user credentials, payment information, and personal data through a multi-stage attack flow. This campaign stands out for its use of progressive data capture, guiding victims through a series of believable steps that closely mirror legitimate account activity.

The phishing email

The attack begins with an email claiming a failed Spotify Premium payment, urging the recipient to update their billing details to avoid service disruption.

The message uses familiar branding and tone, but originates from a suspicious domain:

    • Display name: Spotify
    • Email address: support(at)viaspotify(dot)com

MailGuard analysis shows the domain viaspotify.com was only created on 28 March 2026, with activity rapidly increasing in recent days, peaking at over 1,500 hits in a single day.

Stage 1: Credential harvesting via fake login

Clicking the link directs users to a fake Spotify login page that closely replicates the legitimate interface.

The page includes familiar options such as:

    • Continue with Google
    • Continue with Facebook
    • Continue with Apple

This step is designed to capture usernames and passwords, establishing initial account access.

Stage 2: Payment detail capture

After login, victims are prompted to “confirm” their payment method.

Users are asked to enter:

    • Credit or debit card number
    • Expiry date
    • Security code

Notably, the page validates inputs and returns realistic error messages such as:

    • “Card number is invalid”
    • “Date is invalid”
    • “CVV is invalid”

This reinforces legitimacy and encourages users to re-enter valid details.

Stage 3: Personal data collection

In the final stage, victims are asked to provide additional personal information, including:

    • First and last name
    • Address
    • Phone number
    • Date of birth

After submission, the page may error and redirect users back to the payment stage, giving attackers multiple opportunities to capture financial data.

Why this attack is effective

This campaign demonstrates how phishing attacks are evolving beyond single-step deception.

Instead, attackers are:

    • Replicating legitimate user journeys
    • Building trust incrementally
    • Using validation logic to simulate real systems
    • Recycling victims through multiple capture points

The result is a highly convincing experience that reduces suspicion and increases success rates.

Business impact

While this attack appears consumer-focused, it presents real risks to businesses.

Employees often:

    • Access personal accounts on work devices
    • Reuse passwords across systems
    • Interact with emails during business hours

A single successful interaction can lead to:

    • Credential reuse attacks
    • Account compromise
    • Exposure to further targeted phishing
    • Financial and operational risk
