Streaming services are a must for most of us in the holidays, so it’s not a stretch to see your team falling for this scam and in the process divulging login credentials and credit card information, resulting in fraudulent payments, data breaches and worse. MailGuard has intercepted this new wave of phishing emails designed to harvest sensitive details by impersonating Disney+. The scam is simple but effective, capitalising on urgency and brand trust to convince recipients to “update payment details” for their subscription.
The scam arrives as an HTML email with the subject line "Your Latest Billing Update", purporting to be from Disney+. It features a well-designed interface mimicking the brand's look and feel, with a call-to-action urging recipients to "Update Payment Information" to avoid service interruption.
The email appears to come from senders using random names and unfamiliar domains, including:
Despite the effort to replicate Disney+ branding, the sender details are a red flag, not associated with the legitimate streaming service.
How the scam works
Clicking the "Update Payment Information" button leads users to a spoofed Disney+ login page designed to steal credentials.
Once login details are entered, the scam progresses to a second page requesting credit card information.
Here, users are prompted to submit their full card number, expiration date, CVV, and name, in a clear attempt to conduct financial fraud or identity theft.
The domain used in this attack, lxvdizayn(dot)com, is not affiliated with Disney+ and is a further indicator that the site is malicious.
Why it’s dangerous
This scam follows a broader trend of impersonation-based phishing attacks targeting consumer subscription services.
